Animal Drawing

We are almost done with the year, it was so fast, lot's of work animating this year! And for a break  it has being a lot of fun teaching Drawing Fundamentals at ICS, lots of drawing from life. Here are a few animal drawings fresh  from the ZOO:

Urkel

I did this Drawing pretty quickly tonight for Skech Daillies!  Urkel is from a Nineties show on ABC, I have only heard of it, as it has not aired here in Brazil, but I thought it would be a great opportunity for a Fun design! Here is a little of the process steps on creating this character design.

The Girls!

These are a few more drawings I did as part of the 4forFUN project! Here I selected a few female characters, which by itself is a category with lots of appeal and interest. I see more and more artists whose primary focus are on female drawings and portraits. Over the web it seems a natural trend. 

Although I know the power of female characters - just see the amount of female lead characters in Disney movies - I tend to draw varied archetypes, and maybe gravitate around comic / funny types for cartoon drawing most of the times. Especially animal types are a subject I'm usually inclined to. I also love traditional fantasy illustration, something a seldomly have the chance to get involved professionally, but I like it a lot, specially, pen drawing. But that's something for another post.

I, off course, also love female characters myself, but don't get the chance to draw them a lot. When it comes to animating it, it's definitely one of the hardest subjects to do properly! So this time I tried to capture a bit of the female beauty in those designs. They are quite finished, but not really developed, I didn't try variations or real development, just went directly for the "illustration" type of design. I did the drawings traditionally, and cleaned them up on paper, then applied digital color on PS. Further developing some of those characters are definitely part of my plans for the future. It has being a load of fun, though. Hope you are well, and a Happy New Year to all you guys!

Conan!

My version of "Conan" for the 80's homage at 4forFUN! The movies and comic book where a huge influence in my teen years, spent taking notes on record sheets and rolling dice. I'm considering doing some other characters from the movies, eventually! =)

Skater, Viking and the Aviator!

The Skater, The Viking and the Aviator from the Land of Tomorrow, with his side Kick, Monkee, are a few character that I recently created and designed along with fellow artists at 4forFUN! I used mostly a brownish yellow palette on this characters, with the addition of bluish elements. I tried not to be too saturated, something that often happens in digital painting! I hope you guys are enjoying it, It has being a FUN ride! Best!

Having Fun at 4forFUN!

I'm having a lot of fun drawing every week for the BLOG 4forFUN. We are a group of four artists including Paulo Ignes, Ivan Oviedo Peque and Myself. Our goal is to develop one character based on a theme every week. The main focus in most of my career have been on animation. It was just a few years ago that I started to get more and more interested on Visual Development and Story. When I was invited to join this team, I thought it would be a great challenge, and accepted immediately! It has being indeed a great experience and I'm having the chance to learn along the way!

Recentemente tenho me divertido desenhando toda semana para o BLOG 4forFUN, um grupo de 4 artistas, além de mim, os talentosos Paulo Ignez, Peque e Ivan Oviedo. O objetivo, desenhar um personagem baseado num tema por semana! Durante a maior parte da minha carreira, meu foco foi em animação. Story e Visual development são assuntos relativamente novos pra mim, que de uns anos pra cá vem cada vez mais me interessando. Quando o Paulo me convidou para o 4forFUN, pensei, poxa tá aí um desafio. Topei na hora! Tem sido uma experiência gratificante e estou tendo a chance de aprender muito durante o processo, convivendo com outros artistas tão bons. É empolgante ver a galeria crescendo!

Aqui tem alguns desenhos divertidos que postei por lá, quem não viu ainda, espero que apreciem! 

Elephant!

I did this elephant sketch a while ago. Sometimes when I visit the zoo for life drawing I end up having inspiration for creating more stylized designs. I used a soft orange pass with col-erase pencils and graphite on top of it. Later I scanned it and felt I should add some digital color mimicking markers. Hope you guys like it!

Eu fiz esse sketch de elefante a um tempo, sempre que vou ao zoo e desenho animais, tenho idéia pra traduzir em designs mais estilizados. Eu usei lapis col-erase laranja bem leve e depois no mesmo desenho uma linha preta. Apliquei cor digital imitando markers. Espero que gostem!

Frog!

I worked on this drawing with orange col-erase pencils, and did a very delicate tie-down on top of it. Even I consider it delicate it is far from a cleanup drawing, which I thing is what works best for me. I applied digital colors trying to mimic markers a little bit. 

Eu trabalhei nesse desenho com col-erase laranja, e depois um tiedown bem delicado com preto em cima. Mesmo sendo um tiedown dá para ver na imagem ampliada que o traço é solto, bem distante de um cleanup, o que acho que funciona melhor comigo. Apliquei cores digitais, aproximando aos markers.

Tiny Crocodile Color

Eu recentemente redesenhei o crocodilinho do banner aqui do blog e como estou aos poucos tentando entender mais sobre cor, resolvi jogar uns tons no bichinho. Abaixo tem o processo do rough, seguido do cleanup, e por fim cor. Meu processo de cor é tão básico que não requer maiores explicações, trabalhei com tons sepia e brushes que imitam mídia seca no Photoshop. Por sinal estou planejando dar mais atividade ao Blog, tenho idéia de fazer em breve um post que não é um jacaré =) e continuar postando com intervalos bem menores (mesmo!!!) que um ano! Obrigado por visitar!

I recently redesigned the little crocodile for the Blog's banner. As I'm willing to gradually understand more about color, I decided to put some tones down. I also added a few steps of the drawing process, rough, cleanup and color. My color procedure is so basic, id doesn't require thorough explanations, I just used sepia colors and Photoshop brushes that emulates dry media. By the way, I'm planning on giving a bit more life to the Blog, soon enough there will be a new post that is not a crocodile =) and hopefully more posts following with intervals that are shorter (much shorter!!!) than a year! Zoo Drawings

These drawing are the result of a few zoo trips I did a while ago invited by my dear friend Israel and a bunch of other artists and friends. During a conversation, we realised we haven't been doing animal drawings for centuries... Then we decided would go 12 consecutive visits to the Zoo to make it up. Life got in the way (work!!!) and we did kind it of 3 times ... shame.... Anyway these are some of the stuff I did in those zoo trips. I'm very excited with my new Life Drawing classes, where we are going to do lots of animal drawing. I scanned those for the school folder, and decided to put it up here on the blog.

Esses desenhos são o resultado das minhas últimas visitas ao zoo com um monte de amigos artistas. Conversando com o meu brother Israel, que me convidou pra coisa, percebemos que não desenhávamos animais a muito tempo, fechamos então de ir 12 vezes aos Zoo todo fim de semana, no fim das contas fomos umas 3, 4 vezes mas tá valendo... =) ..... Escaneei alguns desenhos para os folders da ICS Inovation  onde vou dar aulas de Life Drawing a partir de Julho, vamos aprender figura humana e tbm muitos animais. Quem estiver em São Paulo e estiver a fim, dá uma checada lá!

Interestingly enough, the turtle pyramid on the drawing above, was actually a pile of male turtles viciously  fighting for the female, which I believe, was in heat. I never saw turtles moving so fast!

A pirâmide de tartarugas era na verdade uma batalha pela fêmea que estava no cio. Incrível, nunca vi tartarugas se movendo tão rápido!

Crocodile!

I like doing quick sketchs as warm ups before starting the actual work. Sometimes it´s not possible, but it is sure worth it. Here is a progression made from a rough drawing I did as a warm up. Later I did the cleanup on top of it, and added some colors. Probably all the little scales comes from Nico Marlett´s work, which I´m very fond of. =)

Eu gosto de fazer quick sketches como warm ups untes de começar os trabalhos, nem sempre dá tempo, mas vale a pena. Aqui tem um a progressão de um desenho que fiz a partir de um warm up, peguei o rough que tinha feito primeiro e em cima fiz o cleanup e cor, tudo digital. Coloquei várias escaminhas provavelmente por que vi isso no trabalho do Nico Marlett e sempre me agrada muito.  =)

Storyboarding

Nos últimos meses uma parte grande da minha rotina tem sido fazer storyboards pra um projeto incrível, um longa-metragem dirigido pelo Victor Hugo Borges, com roteiro de Larry Wilson e tem uma equipe de arte notável dirigida pelo Eduardo Schaal. Meu colega de boards é o Israel Oliveira dos Santos, o projeto ainda sem título é sobre um garoto, zumbis e Rock and Roll. Estou bem entusiasmado com o projeto, e tenho aprendido muito com essa equipe cheia de talentos. Aqui dá pra dar uma espiada em telas de alguns dos painéis que fiz esses dias.

Doing storyboards have being a big part of my daily routine in the last several months. I have being doing it for a feature project directed by Victor Hugo Borges, script by Larry Wilson. The amazing art team is directed by Eduardo Schaal. My co storyboard artist is Israel Oliveira dos Santos. The untitled project is about a boy, zombies and Rock and Roll, I´m quite enthusiastic about it and learning a lot with this talented team. Here is a sneak peek of a few screens shots of boards I have being doing these days.
